Wedding Technology

We have not been invited to a wedding in a long time so I am learning that technology evolves in every area of our lives.

1) The on line wedding site: now I have seen these before. What was new to me was that one month to the day from the wedding, I received an email from the site, reminding me of the upcoming wedding, asking if I had made my plans and just making sure that as a guest who had said yes, I was ready. I thought it was nice. And I did check back in with the site just to make sure nothing had changed.

2) The on line registry: I have used these for the last several weddings over the years. What was different this time was that Target (at least), once I had ordered, had a "gift now" button to click. I had no idea what it meant and I wanted to send the gift now and not wait so I clicked on it. Very interesting. When I clicked on that button, they sent the bride an email with the picture of a package. When she clicked on the package, our gift and gift card popped up. She was then allowed to make sure her shipping address was correct and Target sent the gift. It takes the excitement out of opening a beautifully wrapped package and at the same time allows the giver to know the couple knows about the gift. The bride sent me an immediate thank you - she may write to me as well, I have no idea - and we had a very nice email conversation about the gift and her wedding plans. I sort of like this.

and 3), apropos of absolutely Nothing having to do with weddings, but immediately on my mind: I wish that our refrigerator ice maker made ice with round edges. Once again I have stabbed my finger on a sharp edge and gotten blood on the ice. Sigh.

New Neighbors

It was interesting that this morning Facebook gave me a post from 8 years ago that was our wonderful Cinnamon, our very large, centered, grounded neighborhood bear. We miss him. Yesterday morning though we enjoyed watching the new neighbors, a mom and her teenagers, try to get into the dumpster. They didn't make it.

Mom and one try the dumpster while the other looks on
from a tree he loved to climb.

I told him he really shouldn't try that tree. It swayed with him.
The boys also wrestled which was new behavior to watch.
Mom had something to say about that as she headed off down the hill.
They stopped playing and followed her.

Random Saturday Thoughts

  1. Are we at war? Opinions seem to vary. I hope not ~ and I am following friends’ advice as well as my own and praying and preparing to vote as soon as I possibly can.
  2. Watching the whole Harry Potter series. Last night I watched Part 6 ~ and afterward just kept sitting and watching other stuff. After watching a HP film (a little over 2 hours), you get up and move around immediately. Other - wise you wake very stiff the next morning!
  3. Therefore it was good to walk it out with Dean and Oso in the woods.
  4.   Last night my blogger friend Mike’s music was Pete Seeger singing “Inch By Inch. David sang it often of course. And last night I thought about human generations - fathers who planted their seeds, mothers who gave birth, communities who offered the sun and rain of bringing a generation to fruition for it to start all over again. It was a lovely thought.
  5. I’ve lived here 17 years. I still get breathless coming up the three flights of stairs. Sigh.

Time to Read Again

Once in a while, my soul tells me it is time to reread a favorite book. The time came this week for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

I have read it twice before and the first time wrote about it here. There is a man in the book ~ and in the Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society ~ who read only Seneca. I can identify more with him now as I am once again enjoying this wonderful writing: wonderful writing about wonderful writing and wonderful reading about wonderful reading. Some times it is hard to realize the book is fiction and that these good folks weren't really there on Guernsey. My son-in-law has relatives living there now and through WWII and I want to talk to them about the book club and if any of their immediate ancestors were a part of it.

In case you need to know, the Society was formed when the Germans occupied Guernsey during WWII and became a way to keep the folks sane and living through the occupation. This is a gem of a book and if it is new to you, find it, please, and take pleasure in the delightful, well-written story that just may call you back again and again.

Two Little Piggies

When I visited Meredith and David at Christmas, I was taken by their salt and pepper containers which I discovered are called pigs. Technically they are Salt Pigs but they use them for both and I wanted some. Even a rather extensive internet search failed to find anything.

The other day Meredith told me my package would arrive on Thursday. What package? In response I got the Meredith "I know something you don't" giggle.

Sure enough, the package arrived and in it were two little piggies ~ perfect white ceramic matching my kitchenware and everyday china. First of all, so great to get a gift for no reason at all. And then to have it be something I really, really wanted. How delightful! Thank you, Meredith and David!!
